Not for the faint of heart. You have to want a little grit with your loft.
Gastown is Vancouver's oldest quarter, and it wears it. Cobblestone streets, the steam clock, heritage brick buildings turned into lofts, and a restaurant and nightlife scene that ranks with the best in town. If you want that loft living, almost New York kind of lifestyle, this is the one neighbourhood downtown that actually offers it.
I will be straight with you, because that is the only way I work. Gastown is not for the faint of heart. You have to be genuinely drawn to a bit of grit and dirt to live here, because it comes with the character. It is not the neighbourhood for me personally, but on a beautiful day I love visiting, and the restaurants keep me coming back. Does the grit read as texture to you, or as a dealbreaker? That answer decides whether Gastown works for you.
A heritage loft and conversion market
Gastown is largely a heritage loft and conversion market, so character, ceiling height, and building condition swing values as much as size does. Older buildings carry their own maintenance realities, which matter a great deal here. Two things are worth having before you buy here: current Gastown numbers, and a walk through what a specific building's age will cost you. I can give you both.
Is Gastown your fit?
- Loft and character buyers. Gastown has the brick, the beams, and the history a glass tower never will. If that is what moves you, little else downtown compares.
- People drawn to grit. You have to like a bit of rough edge with your character. Live here for the texture, not in spite of it, or you will not be happy.
- Night out and restaurant people. Some of the best restaurants in the city are steps from your door, plus the nightlife. This is a neighbourhood you live out loud.

Gastown's cobblestone streets and the landmark steam clock are the postcard, and they are also just your neighbourhood. Worth the visit even if you never live here.

The old warehouse and brick architecture gives Gastown a look nowhere else downtown has. It is the reason the lofts here feel like nowhere else.
